Lila Davies Wright, 103 years young, passed away peacefully with her niece Susan
Schilder holding her hand, February 3, 2019 at King Bruwaert House in Burr Ridge.
Lila was born January 14, 1916, to Karl Simon Davies and Grace Cody (Quigley)
Davies in Morris, Illinois. After growing up on the family farm, the third child of 9 Davies
girls and 3 boys, Lila completed accounting and secretarial studies in Kankakee and
moved to Chicago in 1936 where she worked as a legal secretary.
During WWII, Lila served as Chief Clerk in the Military Justice Division in Paris, France,
and was awarded a Bronze Star citing her “meticulous attention to detail and
undeviating accuracy.” Returning to Chicago, she began a lengthy career as a legal
secretary and office manager, and she completed a degree at Northwestern
University. In 1964 Lila married Frank Wright and became Mom to three children.
Residing in Hinsdale for the next 54 years, she continued her legal work, volunteered
for numerous organizations, and was a long time member of Union Church.
Always quiet, private yet gracious, Lila was a strong, insightful person with an
analytical mind. When she came to King Bruwaert, her dignified manner led others to
conclude that she was in her eighties, not 96. Remarkably, her thinking and memory
remained active to the end. Even in her last months, Lila chose to be outdoors in the
sun and breezes, weather permitting.
Lila was preceded in death by Frank, her loving husband, her parents; her brothers,
Earl (Betty) Davies, Simon (Rose) Davies, and Robert (Jane) Davies; as well as sisters,
Laurel (Horace) Shaw, Grace Davies, Marian (Richard) Campbell, Janet (John)
DeLaurier, Joyce (Allan) Smith, Vivian (James) Mount and Ellen Hulbert.
Lila will be greatly missed by her children Catherine (Michael) LoPinto, Frank (Louise)
Wright, John (Jill) Wright, and by her niece Susan Schilder, our devoted sister,
dedicated to Mom’s care and well-being. She was grandmother to Kipley Wright
(Dwight Pickering), Andrew LoPinto, Christopher LoPinto, Molly Dellwo, and Melanie
Hemann (Jerry). She was Great-Grandmother to Michael and Brandon Hemann and
Corrigan Pickering. She is survived by one sister, Rose Marie Jewett of Janesville,
Wisconsin. Lila also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and their families.
There will be a memorial service at King Bruwaert in late March. In lieu of flowers, a
donation may be made in Lila's memory to the Lila Davies Wright Scholarship Fund at
Work done, much loved, may Lila rest in peace.
