Dr. James Joseph Schuler, 72, at rest January 20, 2019.  He was born to John and Ella Schuler on March 12, 1946. James was the beloved husband of Catherine Jean Schuler of nearly 50 years and father to James Patrick and Matthew John.

James spent his early years growing up in Batavia, Illinois.  He received his B.S. from St. John’s University, M.D. from UIC College of Medicine, and M.S. from UIC College of Graduate Medical Education.  His medical internship, residency, chief residency and fellowship training all completed at UIC and VA Hospitals.

Dr. Schuler’s contributions to the medical field and professional accomplishments were extensive. During his forty years at the University of Illinois Hospital he was a life-long supporter of the Hospital. He rose rapidly through the ranks to become Division Chief of Vascular Surgery at the UIC. He was instrumental in setting up the Vascular Laboratory at the Hospital and providing academic structure to the recently formed division. He was a marvelous doctor and a great teacher; treasured by his peers, his surgical residents and medical students.

James was a true outdoorsman.  He spent his leisure time hunting and fishing with family and friends.  In his later years, James loved his Colorado ranch where he and Catherine lived for 14 years.

Dr. Schuler is survived by his two sons, their wives Maureen and Kelley, and his beloved grandchildren Jack, Claire, and Austin.  James was the eldest of John and Ella’s three children and is survived by brother Jack (Sarah) Schuler and sister Jane (Paul) Steingraeber and many nieces and nephews.

He will be profoundly missed.
