VIRGINIA C. CAGANDAHAN (nee: Cuartelon), age 85, of Berwyn, Illinois, of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, and of Paete, Laguna, passed away January 10, 2021.  Loving wife of 54 years to Plutarco C. Cagandahan.  Beloved mother of Carina (Ignacio) Macapagal, Cerilda (Christopher) Aleck, Carissa (died at infancy), Cetania (Erik) Mendoza.  Caring grandmother of Alexandra Lauren & Matthew Peter, and Ian Thomas & Sean Christian.  Dear sibling to six sisters and two brothers.

A registered nurse, she worked as operating room nurse at Palawan General Hospital, as operating room nurse at Cook County Hospital in Chicago for two years under the US exchange visitors nurse program. Back to the Philippines she easily found work as operating room nurse at American Hospital in Manila and at the Philippine National Railways Hospital later on.  Back to Chicago again, this time with her family and as immigrant, she was with Cook County Hospital for 22 years, holding positions of day-shift operating room nurse, night-shift medical ward nurse, and charge nurse at the step-down heart transplant ward.

A very devoted Catholic she had been Eucharistic Minister at St. Leonard Church and a Minister of Care volunteering at MacNeal Hospital, and active member of the Filipino Simbang Gabi choir. The Apostleship of Prayers of the Sacred Heart (based at St. Peter’s Church in Skokie, IL), of which Virginia was a member, made weekly visits, bringing the Statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Fatima to different families, during which visits the rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet were recited.

During her free time, Virginia engaged in gardening, cooking, traveling with her family and friends, and helping neighbors.

Her association membership included Palawenos of the Midwest (president for 2 years with two consecutive years of medical missions in Palawan), Laguna Association of the Midwest, Inc., Paetenians International Chicago-Midwest Chapter. These are social, civic associations with the aim of giving help, monetary, in-kind and services for the benefit of indigent communities in the Philippines.  She celebrated retirement with Forever Young (Cook County Hospital retirees).

In lieu of flowers, donations are prefered in honor of Virginia to:  St. Leonard Church, 3318 Clarence Ave., Berwyn, IL  60402
