James “Jim” Gordon Steiner, 80 years old of Darien, IL, passed away Ash Wednesday, February 17, 2021, at his home with his family surrounding him.
Jim was born on October 19, 1940 in Chicago, IL, son of Gordon and Catherine (Runk) Steiner. He attended Lyons Township High School and University of Illinois and Miami University in Ohio. In 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. and was in the Reserves for several years. He was introduced to his wife, Paula (Beresky) at Howard Gardens by lifelong friends and married her in 1967. They eventually settled in Clarendon Hills, IL to raise their 5 children. His dedication to his family was immeasurable. Jim had a selfless, kind, loving heart. He was awarded a Good Samaritan award for saving the life of a neighborhood boy. He spent many seasons coaching his sons’ baseball and basketball and daughters’ softball teams and was an avid White Sox fan. He loved playing 16” softball with friends at Gilbert Park, Friday night tennis with his wife, and fishing in Wisconsin, telling stories of the “big one” that got away. In his retirement, you could always find Jim in the stands at one of his grandkid’s sporting events. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Left to tell all his wonderful stories and memories (and sort through all his receipts since 1967) are his 5 children and spouses, Jenny (Chris) Mall, Suzy (Greg) D’Aprile, Doug (Sara) Steiner, Bob (Kristen) Steiner, and Katie (James) Trent; 14 grandchildren: Natalie, Ashley, and Lauren Mall; Andrew, Matthew, Michael, and Danny D’Aprile; Jack Steiner; Allie, Molly, and Johnny Steiner; Olivia, Ben, and Maggie Trent; brothers, Ron (Debbie) and Bill (Nancy) Steiner; brother-in-law, Dr. Ronald (Maura) Beresky; and sisters-in-law, Margaret “Peggy” (Rene) Brabender and Roxanne Marks.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Paula; brother-in-law, Dr. Donald Beresky; and granddaughter, Anna Faye Trent.
