Alfonso Modesto Zapata Vargas, also known as “Al” age 81, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025, while visiting his homeland of the Philippines. He was born on June 15, 1944, in Manila, to Domingo Vargas and Encarnacion Zapata Vargas.

        He was a devoted husband, proud father, and cherished grandfather. Alfonso is survived by his beloved wife, Gloria, and his daughters: Nerissa (Edwin) Martinez, Jily Grace (Benjamin) Vizconde, and Jaygee (Kristoffer) Dayrit. He was a loving grandfather to Alexa, Gabryel, Arieanna, Annaliese, Amelie, Kristian, Logan, and Jordan.

He was preceded in death by his son, the late Efrenal Dante Vargas, and his siblings: Clarita (Kian) Kuong, Nicoreto (Lydia) Vargas, and Guillermo (Evelyn) Vargas.

       Alfonso was a proud graduate of the University of the Philippines. He dedicated much of his life to serving at the Land Bank of the Philippines, where he held the esteemed position of Intelligence Officer. His commitment and professionalism earned him the respect of colleagues and a lasting legacy.

       Beyond his career, Alfonso loved gardening, finding joy and tranquility in nurturing plants. He was also an avid sports enthusiast, particularly passionate about horse racing, which brought excitement and happiness into his life.

     Alfonso was known for his intelligence, loving nature, and thoughtful spirit. He was proud and supportive, always there for his family and friends. His amusing sense of humor and tough resilience made him a unique and cherished presence to all who knew him.

     Alfonso was also a caring uncle, cousin, and friend to many, whose kindness and warmth touched countless lives.

     His legacy of love, strength, and thoughtful care lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A visitation will be held on Sunday July 27, 2025 from 11am until 6pm at Adolf & Powell Funeral Home, 7000 Madison St, Willowbrook, IL 60527. 

Family and friends will meet for a 10am funeral mass on Monday July 28, 2025 at Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N Sauganash Ave, Chicago, IL 60646.

Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery, Chicago.
