Colonel (Ret) David Trevor Jones was a 1965 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point.  In 1973 he received two Masters of Science Degrees, (Aeronautical Engineering and Applied Mathematics) from Stanford University.  A graduate of Airborne and Ranger schools, he also attended and graduated from fixed and rotary wing training, the Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

After graduation from West Point, Colonel Jones’s first assignment was as a company commander 1/19th Battalion, 24th Infantry Division in Augsburg, Germany.  He then went on to Vietnam serving as an advisor to the Vietnamese Army.  After Vietnam, he attended graduate school and completed both fixed and rotary wing training, supporting the 4077th in Korea as a helicopter pilot.  He also had assignments at Ft. Lewis, Washington as Battalion Executive Officer and on the staff of the 9th Infantry Division ; in Panama as the commander of the 4/20th Mech Battalion; Fort Hood, Texas as S-3 for III Corp; Chief of Staff for the Test and Evaluation Command at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland; and Redstone Arsenal in Alabama as a program manager in research and development, where he retired in 1992.

Upon retirement, Colonel Jones and his wife moved to Annapolis where Colonel Jones started a second career working for a small engineering firm before relocating a few years later to Arlington Heights, Illinois where he was a Program Director for Northrup Grumman in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.  Retiring from his second career, he and his wife built a home in Bradenton, Florida where they enjoyed traveling, boating, skeet shooting, golf, fishing and the beach.  In 2019 they moved to the Chicago area to be near family – it is where Colonel Jones passed peacefully in his sleep on October 15th after a valiant 10- year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Colonel Jones’s decorations include the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Silver Star, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Patricia (Patti) Lewis of Croton-on-Hudson, New York; two daughters, Kimberly Jones of Brookfield, Illinois and Kristin Jones Turner (Shane Turner) of La Grange, Illinois; three grandchildren, Jackson, Grace and Carson Turner; two brothers Donald Jones and Dennis Jones.  He was pre-deceased by two brothers, Thomas Jones and Duncan Jones.

Inurnment will be held at the United States Military Academy at West Point at a later date.
