Donald A. Sandstedt was born on 10/15/27 in Paxton, Illinois. Son of Arthur Clarence and Maybelle Sandstedt who are buried in Grandview Cemetery near Champaign, Illinois. Don completed Champaign High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Army 1946-1947 as a Small Arms Weapons Mechanic in Seoul, Korea; on the G.I. bill he graduated from the University of Illinois in 1951.
As Production Manager at Alloy Engineering & Casting Company, Champaign, Illinois, Don learned the foundry business and moved on to Ford Motor Company in Chicago as Supervisor in Manufacturing operations. A Chicago job opportunity back to the foundry industry opened as Sales Engineering followed by similar positions in Detroit and Indianapolis. In 1970, Don returned to Chicago as a partner in Carrier-Sandstedt Enterprises and retired in 1998
Don loved traveling and with his wife Minnie visited 29 foreign countries and all 50 states. Don was always active and participated in the George Williams College program (Jolly Joggers), 10K events, scuba diving, racquetball, skiing, tennis, golf, hunting, motorcycling and various farm activities. In recent years Don and Minnie have resided in Burr Ridge, Illinois and have been very active in all events including the Adorables and Men in Black dance groups.
Don is survived by his wife, Minnie of 62 years and son’s Doug (Diana) Singleton (Charlotte, N.C.), Kent (Aileen) Sandstedt (Steamboat Springs, CO), Corey (Kathy) Sandstedt (Chicago, IL) and daughter, Deborah (Robert) Van Nest (Piedmont, CA). Seven grandchildren – Rory and Drew Van Vest; J.T., Ali and Trenton Sandstedt; Alexandra and Jacqueline Sandstedt. Six great grandchildren – Travis and Brinley Van Nest, Olivia and Axel Ihlamur, and Ezekiel and Harper Phillip.
A visitation will be held on Friday April 25, 2025 from 4pm to 6pm at King Bruwaert House 6101 S County Line Rd, Burr Ridge, IL 60527.
