Dr. John Francis Moran, M.D., a distinguished cardiologist and esteemed professor, passed away peacefully at home on February 13, 2025, in Burr Ridge, Illinois, at the age of 86. Born on September 5, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, he was the beloved son of John and Mary Moran, and older brother to Patrick (Rosemary) and Thomas (Diane).

In 1965, Dr. Moran married Cabrina (nee Greco) Moran, with whom he shared 60 years of love and partnership. Together, they raised three accomplished children: Dr. Stephanie Moran (Rick Sargis), Dr. Christopher Moran (Laura Stack Moran), and Dr. Meghan Moran (Michael Campea). He was also a devoted grandfather to Claire Moran, Delilah Campea, and Kaia Campea. Dr. Moran found joy in spending time with his three granddaughters and had a passion for movies (especially westerns), fiction writing, and books on tape.

Dr. Moran was an excellent student and remained a proud alumnus of St. Rita High School in Chicago. He received a full scholarship to attend university and earned a Bachelor of Science in biology at Loyola University Chicago. After university, he pursued a doctorate in medicine at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, obtaining his medical degree in 1964. Following medical school, he completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois Hospital Chicago and then subspecialized in cardiology in a fellowship at the University of Chicago. He also became a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC). Dr. Moran served his country as a Major in the United States Air Force as a cardiologist at David Grant USAF Medical Center on Travis Air Force base from 1969 to 1971. 

Dr. Moran’s professional career was marked by significant contributions to the field of cardiology and his commitment to medical education. He served as the Chief of Cardiology at Loyola University Medical Center and was a respected Professor of Medicine at the same institution. His dedication to patient care, research, and education left an indelible mark on the medical community having cared for thousands of patients, published many journal articles, and taught countless medical students and resident physicians throughout the course of his career. During his career, he was recognized several times as a ‘Top Doctor’ in Chicago Magazine. Dr. Moran’s legacy of compassion, dedication, and excellence will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday February 19,2025 from 3pm to 8pm at Adolf and Powell Funeral Home, 7000 S Madison St, Willowbrook, IL 60527. Family and friends will gather on Thursday February 20,2025 for a 11am funeral mass at St John of the Cross Church 5005 Wolf Rd, Western Springs, Il. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
