G. Janet Henshaw (née Ayers), age 85, passed away on May 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on June 1, 1940, to William P. Ayers (1905–1974) and Grace Epperson Ayers (1908–1962), Janet was the youngest of three children. She shared a special lifelong bond with her sister, Susan (the late William) Bolton, whose love, guidance, and support shaped Janet throughout her life. She was also a loving sister to William (the late Barbara) Ayers.

Janet was the beloved wife of Ray Henshaw, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. As a nurse and firefighter, they spent their lives helping others while building a life at home filled with love, loyalty, and adventure. Whether by car or motorcycle, Janet and Ray embraced every opportunity to travel. Along the way, they created cherished memories and stories that would be shared with their children and grandchildren.

After graduating from Lyons Township High School, Janet attended St. Mary’s College in Minnesota, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She then began a distinguished nursing career that spanned decades.

Janet dedicated her career to nursing, beginning at La Grange Memorial Hospital, continuing at Hinsdale Hospital, and concluding her career in family practice medicine. Caring for others was more than a profession. It was a reflection of who she was. Known to many as “Saint Janet” and to her family as “Janny Cakes,” she was a trusted source of wisdom, comfort, and encouragement. Her greatest wish was that those around her would find love, happiness, and peace.

She was a devoted mother, cherished mother-in-law, loving grandmother, proud great-grandmother, beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt, and loyal friend. Family was the center of Janet’s life, and she took great pride in the people she loved.

Janet found joy in reading, traveling, attending musicals, and sharing her love of classic Hollywood films.

Janet is survived by her husband, Ray Henshaw; her children, Michael Henshaw and Kathleen (Mark) Sammons; her grandchildren, Karena (Jordan Lehman), Jillian Sammons, and Matthew Sammons; her great-grandchildren, Rayne and Norie Lehman; her sister, Susan Bolton; her brother, William Ayers; her sister-in-law, Gale Henshaw; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Services will be held privately by the family.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
